Characteristics and Main Application of Hot-Dip Galvanized Aluminum-Magnesium Laminates

Characteristics and Main Application of Hot-Dip Galvanized Aluminum-Magnesium Laminates

According to the definition of European standard EN10346-2015, zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating is a ternary alloy coating whose main component is zinc, and the content of aluminum and magnesium is between 1.5 and 8% (of which the magnesium content is not less than 0.2%).

Why does the aluminum-magnesium ratio specified in the European standard for zinc-aluminum-magnesium coatings range from 1.5 to 8%, instead of a fixed value such as 55% aluminum content in galvalume-zinc coatings?

This is because steel mills applied for trademarks and patents after investing a lot of R&D funds to develop new products. Therefore, Houfa Steel Mills adjusted the ingredients in order to avoid patents, which also resulted in slight differences in the proportions of zinc, aluminum, and magnesium coatings from different manufacturers. These products with fine-tuned coating composition are usually considered to be “zinc-aluminum-magnesium coated steel sheets”, so the European standard set a range in order to “take into account the overall situation” when revising it.

Zinc aluminum magnesium coating classification

Baosteel conducted a comprehensive analysis of magnesium-containing coated steel plates for commercial applications. The magnesium content in most coatings is ≤3%. According to the aluminum content in the coating, zinc-aluminum-magnesium coatings are divided into:

1. Low aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating

Low aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating, aluminum content: 1-3.5%, this coating is formed by adding a certain amount of aluminum magnesium and other elements on the basis of hot dip galvanizing. Baosteel conducted its first industrial trial production in June 2016. The coated steel plate has also been tested in a color-coating unit, and a low-aluminum-zinc-aluminum-magnesium substrate color-coated steel plate has been successfully developed. This coating is an upgraded version of the corrosion resistance of hot-dip pure zinc coating. Baosteel is referred to as BZM coated steel plate and its color-coated plate.

2. Medium aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating

Medium aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating, aluminum content: 5~11%.

3. High aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating

High-aluminum-zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating, aluminum content: 55%. This coating is formed by adding certain magnesium and other elements to hot-dip aluminum-zinc. Baosteel conducted its first industrial trial production in August 2016. The coated steel plate has also been tested in a color-coating unit, and a high-aluminum-zinc-aluminum-magnesium substrate color-coated steel plate has been successfully developed. This coating is an upgraded version of the corrosion resistance of hot-dip aluminum-zinc coating. Baosteel is referred to as BAM coated steel plate and its color-coated plate.

Characteristics of zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating

Compared with traditional coatings such as hot-dip galvanizing, galvanized aluminum, and zinc-iron alloys, zinc-aluminum-magnesium coatings have better corrosion resistance.

(1) Since the zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy coating is relatively thin and dense, it is not easy to peel off the coating;

(2) The corrosion products will flow and wrap around the cuts, so the protection performance for cuts and defects is better;

(3) It also has good corrosion resistance in some harsh corrosive environments (such as animal husbandry, coastal areas, etc.);

(4) It can replace some stainless steel with low requirements, or be galvanized after processing, etc., which can simplify the user’s processing procedures.

Application of Zinc Aluminum Magnesium Board

1. Zinc-aluminum-magnesium board has good fire protection and anti-corrosion properties, making it an ideal choice for building materials. It is widely used in roofs, wall panels, keel ceilings, porous plates, cable trays and other parts in civil construction.

2. Zinc-aluminum-magnesium plates are used in the construction of steel structures and steel structure accessories for agricultural breeding greenhouses and greenhouses because of their super corrosion resistance, self-healing, and easy processing characteristics, meeting the special requirements of the animal husbandry industry for materials.

3. Zinc-aluminum-magnesium plates also have important applications in the automotive industry. For example, it can be used in car body panels to improve the overall strength and rigidity of the car. Some high-end automotive sheet manufacturing companies have begun producing zinc-aluminum-magnesium automotive sheets to meet market demand for high-performance, high-quality automotive sheets.

4. Zinc-aluminum-magnesium plates are also used in equipment such as power transformers and capacitors, as well as power communication facilities such as power transmission and distribution high and low voltage switch cabinets and box-type substation outer bodies.

5. In the field of railway transportation, zinc-aluminum-magnesium plates are used in vehicle exterior covering panels, doors, etc., which help improve the performance and service life of railway vehicles.

Market demand for zinc-aluminum-magnesium panels

1. With the improvement of the competitiveness of zinc, aluminum and magnesium products of domestic enterprises, the trend of importing zinc, aluminum and magnesium products from abroad has been reversed. A large number of high-quality products are exported abroad, even to advanced countries such as Europe and the United States.

This means that zinc-aluminum-magnesium panels have great demand in domestic and foreign markets.

2. The development of the photovoltaic industry is in a growth stage, and the requirements for product quality are getting higher and higher. Zinc, aluminum and magnesium products are widely used in the photovoltaic industry due to their excellent corrosion resistance, strength and long life.

Especially components such as photovoltaic brackets have extremely high requirements on the weather resistance and corrosion resistance of materials. Zinc-aluminum-magnesium panels can exactly meet these needs.

Overall, zinc-aluminum-magnesium panels are in demand across multiple industries, and are likely to continue to grow as technology advances and the demand for lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials increases.
