Types of Welded Pipe

Welded pipes can be categorized based on the seam shape:

  • Straight Seam Welded Pipe
    Straight seam welded pipes are produced with a simple manufacturing process, offering high production efficiency and lower costs. They are typically used for smaller diameter applications where production speed and economy are priorities.
  • Spiral Welded Pipe
    Spiral welded pipes generally provide higher strength compared with straight seam pipes. A narrower steel strip can be used to produce larger-diameter pipes, and the same strip can be used to produce different diameters. However, for pipes of the same length, the weld seam length increases by 30–100%, and production speed is slower. Spiral welded pipes are commonly used for larger-diameter applications.

Spiral welded pipe types include:

  • Automatic submerged arc welding (SAW): Classified as Class A or B based on medium pressure, commonly using Q235, Q235F, or low-alloy steel 16Mn.
  • High-frequency welding (HFW): Typically manufactured from Q235, Q235F, or similar carbon steels, mainly for low-pressure fluid transportation.
